ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [SALOMÉ.] 1897. 13 1/2x9 1/2 niches, 34x24 cm. Condition A. Hand-signed by the artist in pencil. One of two plates Mucha designed for this distinguished series, depicting heroines of antiquity. Salomé is a sensuous, full frontal image in which the dancer is shown wearing ornate jewelry and a surprisingly complex, even abstract, veil. She is not depicted carrying the head of John the Baptist, but rather in the throes of the dance that gave Herod such pleasure. Mucha R10c.
